Insulation removal in Brentwood, CA - an attic that's clean, dry and ready to insulate

Insulation that's damp, moldy or torn up by pests comes out first, so whatever goes back in sits in a clean, dry attic.

A worker in protective gear vacuums old attic insulation with a hose as dust rises nearby.

I look at your attic myself

I come out, climb into the attic or crawl space and look at the insulation before anyone talks price. If a leak or damp spot has to be handled first, I'd rather tell you the job isn't ready than do it twice.

Attic work done in order since 2021

We've worked out of Brentwood since 2021, and we do attic jobs in order. The damaged insulation comes out, leaks and gaps get dealt with, and only then does new material go in, so it isn't covering up a problem.

Licensed, insured and easy to reach

We're licensed and insured, and our crew lead runs the work on site with a small crew. Your satisfaction, guaranteed. Call (925) 503-1068 or send us the form to set up a look at your attic.

Removing old attic insulation in Brentwood

Insulation removal in Brentwood, CA, means taking old insulation out of your attic before new insulation goes in. It's for houses where the insulation up there got wet, grew mold or was torn up by pests, so the problem leaves with it instead of getting buried.

Most people call because the room over the garage runs hot, the power bill keeps climbing, or they looked through the hatch and saw stains or a nest. The first question is whether it all has to come out, and that depends on what condition it's in, which I check in person. Before the crew comes, clearing a path to the hatch helps, because the old insulation leaves your house in bags.

The price depends on the size of your attic and the type, amount and condition of the insulation up there, because a deep layer of wet loose fill takes more work to bag out than a thin layer of dry batts. The schedule depends on the same size, plus how hard the attic is to move around in. For your own figure, the written estimate lists the removal and any prep work along with the new insulation.

How our insulation removal works

Taking out only what's damaged

We take out insulation that's wet, moldy or pest-damaged and top up what's still clean and dry, because pulling good material only adds to your cost. The bad material can't stay, since new insulation laid over a soaked or fouled layer keeps the problem in your attic. Most of this is attic work, but cold floors often trace back to damp, sagging batts underneath the house, and we pull those before any new crawl space insulation goes in.

Fixing and sealing before it's refilled

With the old layer out, the attic is open, so we deal with leaks, damp spots and old wiring before anything new goes in. Then we close the gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch. That's air sealing, and it keeps the new insulation from fighting a draft. We keep the eave vents clear so the attic still breathes, and we spread the new layer evenly out to the edges. If rooms still feel drafty after the attic is done, wall insulation is often the next place to look.

Leaving vermiculite to an abatement firm

If your insulation looks like vermiculite, we leave it untouched and point you to a separate asbestos abatement firm. The EPA says that removal belongs with a trained, accredited abatement contractor, not the homeowner, and one that's independent of whoever assessed it, which is why we only look. For 100 square feet or more, that firm needs the state's C-22 asbestos classification or a certified qualifier, and it must be registered with the state. The Air District needs notice first, usually 10 business days. A home of four or fewer units can give 72 hours' notice for an extra fee. Delta Diablo's household hazardous waste program won't take asbestos either, so don't bag any of it up yourself.

What insulation removal looks like with us

  1. Call or send a message

Call or send the form, and tell us roughly how big the attic is and whether you've noticed moisture, signs of pests or loose, pebble-like fill. We get back to you the same way you reached us and set up a visit.

  2. I look and write it up

I come out, go into the attic or crawl space and walk you through what I found and what I'd do first. If a leak or damp spot has to be fixed before removal, it goes on the written estimate.

  3. Our crew removes and cleans up

Our crew lead and a small crew bag out the old insulation, then seal and insulate, in that order, cleaning up as they go. When they're done, they walk the finished attic with you so you can see the coverage reaches the edges.

Insulation removal questions in Brentwood

How much does attic insulation removal cost in Brentwood?

Across the US, removing old attic insulation usually costs about $1 to $2 per square foot. That's the going rate nationally, not our quote. A bigger attic or a deep, wet layer pushes a job toward the top of that range, so I price yours after I've been up there.

Can new insulation go on top of old insulation in my attic?

Yes. If the old insulation is clean, dry and pest-free, new insulation can go right on top of it. If it was damaged by moisture, mold, fire or pests, it should come out first. Its condition is what decides whether you pay for removal or only for new insulation.

How can I tell if my attic insulation is vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a loose, pebble-like fill that's usually gray-brown or silver-gold. You can compare yours with the EPA's vermiculite photos by looking from the hatch, without touching or stirring it. If it matches, tell us when you call and we'll leave it alone.

How long does it take to remove insulation from an attic?

Removal takes anywhere from about 4 hours to 2 days or more, depending on the attic's size and how complicated the job is. If your attic is large, low or hard to move around in, plan for the longer end. At the estimate, I'll tell you what your attic involves.
